How long can I wait before getting fillings?
I recently went to the dentist after 3 years and has performed a cleansing. She used this new machine that beeps if a tooth has a cavity. She told me that I have 7 cavities (I've never had a problem my entire adult life), so I stayed very surprised when I heard this. I have no insurance, and I'm basically broke, so there's no way I can pay $ 1400 for all 7 fillings. My questions are: Has anyone heard of this machine that detects fillings? What is your experience with that? Can I wait until January (when I can get dental insurance) to get this taken care of ….. or my teeth will be in dire straits? I'm torn and not sure what to do – help!
First, I would get a second opinion. I've never met a dentist who has a moment of detecting machine … and based on IT rather than its own experience. And $ 200 per fill? You're getting robbed. Seven cavities, when you've had in the past is not very surprising. If you're a minor cavities, may not be filled at all the … and can correct themselves with regular brushing. Secondly, yes … you can expect … caries, if well maintained (brushing often with good toothpaste) can stop its progress. If you do not mind, then you have plenty of time. Avoid whitening toothpaste, which can promote progress (they have abrasives in them) … And good luck!
