Is it hard to replace a crank seal on a 400ex and if not how do you do it?
My 400ex leaks oil out of the crank seal where the small sprocket is and if its an easy fix i would rather do it my self than take it to a shop and get over charged…
it is called the counter shaft seal. yes you can do it yourself. the hardest part is getting the old one out. what i do is drill a 1/8 inch hole in the old seal. (WARNING you will have to use a drill stop so that the drill bit can not go in more than 1/4 inch deep. if you do you will damage the barring and will have to do an entire engine rebuild.) now take a sheet Metal screw and screw it in about 2 full turns and pull it out with a pair of pliers. then clean the seal area and drive the new one in with a deep well socket that fits the seal. just make sure that the seal is flush with the case. don’t use any sealers and make sure the seal area is dry.
remember, do not hurt the barring behind the seal.
