Can I put a new T8 fluorescent tube in a piece of T12?

Hello, I know the pins for T8 tubes are the same as T12 and T8 are cheaper and more efficient today. T12s are more difficult to get now that T8 is increasingly popular, but I have T12, which have been burned at the a friend's house and asked if I could put in T8 and let it work straight away? In addition, installation is a T12 4 foot, installed 10 years ago.

NO. The T12 ballasts in a fixture are deisgned to T12 lamps. T8 fixtures have electronic ballasts in them. If you use the T8 in a T12 fixture will shorten the life of the bulbs and off the ballast. Its possible to replace the ballast of the old appliance with an electronic ballast if you really want to use the T8 is both.
