Simple engineering problem: heat dissipation?
I have a magnetic stirrer with a circular base, which is used to spin a magnetic stirring rod in a flow cell. The only important detail is that the magnetic stirrer generates a little heat which could alter the results of my experiments. I need a simple, cheap way to prevent the heat from getting to the flow cell. I can probably put something a few millimeters thick between both. Any ideas about materials I could use, or alternative approaches? I could run water through the outside of the flow cell, but I’m trying to keep things simple.
A small air gap will prevent any heat conduction from the stirrer base.
Blowing air into the gap (for example put an air pipe into the centre of the circle and let the air blow radially outwards) will prevent most of the convection. Since you are only worried about “a little heat”, radiation probably isn’t significant anyway (which is just as well, since it’s almost impossible to prevent)..
But if your experiment is temperature sensitive, presumably you are measuring the temperature anyway, so do you really care about “small” sources of heat – not unless the whole experiment is in a temperature-controlled environment.
