Analytical Balance
what is the detection limit on a standard laboratory analytical balance?
Without *trying* to sound like a smart-aleck… It depends on the balance.
Specifically, it depends on the type and the capacity. Type, because some kinds have a higher precision than others. Capacity, because it typically gets measured as a fraction of the total range – 1/16,000 or so, for instance – and 1/16,000th of a large mass is larger than 1/16,000th of a small mass.
As a guideline, the Mettler-Toledo company’s “Analytical Balance” products include two current models. One weighs up to 31 g at 0.01 mg precision, and up to 520 g at 0.1 mg precision. The other weighs up to 61 g at 0.01 mg precision, up to 320 g at 0.1 mg precision.
So the detection limit would be either 0.01 or 0.1 mg (same as the precision). This value is pretty typical of good-quality analytical balances.
